Things that I learned the hard way:

  • Buy additional engines, as soon as you can. They take a whole turn to install, so you won't be able to do anything else other than train, prospect, and look up market date on other planets. You won't be able to buy them at all worlds. But the extra range is essential for quick dashes to planets. It turns ou that the distance you can travel is the square root of the number of engines a ship has installed. I really wish that I'd started buying engines more quickly than I did and had not been limited to single square/ grid hops for so long.
  • Missing turns is OK in this game, as you default to prospecting. However, even if you don't have time to plan a proper turn's action, consider buying engines, lasers, cargo holds, or shields. You need to remain at a planet for many of these actions and you'll still prospect while installing the new device/ feature. And the orders are pretty simple to write!

What tips do you have?
